A Lenten Thought on the Eucharist

As we journey through Lent, it is easy to become distracted, disheartened or simply overwhelmed, but we must never lose sight that God is with us and longs for us, longs for us to be with Him for eternity.

Knowing that we a have a God who is so loving, we should have great faith and trust in Him and not despair when things become difficult. Yet, knowing that we have such a wonderful God should lead us to honor and love Him in all we do, especially when approaching Him in the most Holy Eucharist.

Having the proper disposition to approach the Eucharist can sometimes be difficult in a society that encourages us to indulge in our own wants and desires; therefore, we must remember who we belong to – We are God’s. We belong to Him. He has known us from eternity and we are all special to him. That being said, we should ask frequently ask ourselves if we honor God and question the ways by which we show him our love.

It is very easy to rationalize our choices and make excuses for sinful actions. It is also very easy to give into temptation, but matters are only compounded when we give into the allurements of the world and approach our Lord with an indifferent interior disposition.

We should always have in our mind who we are approaching in the Eucharist and that if we are aware of mortal sins that we have committed, we should confess them before partaking our Lord. To forget ourselves and disregard our Lord’s precepts and receive Him irreverently is to sin greatly, worst still it is an unloving act. We are called to love God with all heart, and we are called to love as He loves; therefore, we should be loving and humble enough to confess and seek forgiveness for our sins before approaching our Lord in the Eucharist and to give Him our all by consecrating all our thoughts and actions to Him.

It should not be thought that our Lord doesn’t love a sinner because He most definitely does, but it is important to realize that God will not abide in us as long as we are in mortal sin, and that which has sin cannot be in the presence of God. Even our Lord Jesus, after taking our sins upon himself, could not immediately be in the presence of the Father; rather, that blemish of our sin had to removed from Him before He could ascend to the Father. We should keep this in mind as we approach the most Holy Eucharist, and it should inspire us the take advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

God loves us so much that He sent Jesus, His only son, to die for us. He loves us so much that he gives us many opportunities by which to receive His grace and love and be forgiven for our sins. Therefore, let us show Him our love by honoring Him in all we do, especially when approaching the Eucharist. Let us strive daily to be better Christians, especially during this season of Lent. It is the time when we journey with our Lord in the desert and by the end we should be to approach Easter with a stronger faith and rise with Lord having a more sanctified life through the experience.

Lent is the time when we are truly called to reject the world and follow Christ. It is a time for transformation and sanctification. It is a time when we should truly try to meditate on our life and rectify what is displeasing to God, and it is a truly a time that we should strive to once again visit the Sacraments if we have be neglectful, especially the Eucharist. It is time to seek our Lord and rise with Him on Easter.

Have a blessed Lent.
