Catholic Educational Services compromising souls

As the struggle continues between modernism and orthodoxy, we once again see a line drawn in Britain. It is there that an amendment to the Children, Schools and Families Bill is being debated and there that it would seem that the Catholic Education Service (CES) has made a deal with the devil. The new amendment, which deals with the mandatory Personal Social and Health Education program, has been supported by the CES; however, "does not give schools freedom to oppose abortion, contraception and homosexual activity on moral grounds" ( Lifesite News ). How can this be? How can an institutional body of the Catholic Bishops agree or support a bill that does not give Catholic schools the ability teach things in a fashion to avoid intrinsic evils? Due to this compromise, secular perspectives on abortion, contraception and homosexuality will be forced to be taught. Unfortunately, the domain where these subjects will be presented will not be the great halls of universities; rathe

The Lenten Journey

Image
Lent has begun, and we once again begin our journey with Our Lord through the desert. During this time, we should be partaking in some acts of mortification, but we should remember that our acts need not be giant; rather, our journey can be a series of many little acts by which we improve spiritual disposition and grow ever closer to our baptismal vows. Part of the object of Lent is to deny ourselves so that we may grow closer to Our God and hear more clearly the Holy Spirit who ever desires to speak to us, but who can be ignored because of our own worldly wants and desires. At the beginning of the Lenten journey, we may find things difficult; however, through discipline, practice and grace, things will become ever easier, but we should be careful not to take on more than we are able to do. In zealousness, we can sometimes attempt mortification that are above our realm of expectation. Now, I am usually not one to deter people from taking the hard road, but what I am saying is that

Valentine's Day Profaned

Image
Valentines Day comes to an end, and people shower their loved ones with flowers and candies. They think of a cute little cherub flying around with an arrow shooting people, but this has nothing to do with feast of Saint Valentine. He was a priest who lived in Rome under Claudius II, and was beheaded for being a Christian on February 14, 270. He was a martyr, a doctor and a priest. Sadly, much of what popular society presents today has no relevance to the honoring of the great saint. Reflecting upon the life of St. Valentine should help every Christian to reject the world and embrace Christ, but more and more this day is profaned. A clear example is the Philippine government's Valentine's Day campaign [ Valentine flowers and condoms ‘vulgar’: Bishop ]. During the campaign, they chose to distribute condoms with flowers to adult customers. Again there is this classification of this day being about lovers, but the true meaning is completely missed; further, we have devaluing of h

Wasted Time, Distractions and Sainthood

Time passes stealthfully, but its measure is not without limit. Every life comes to at least a mortal end; therefore, one ought to consider the boundaries of their existence and not always suppose a tomorrow on the horizon. Some could possibly consider the scope for time as a rational excuse to justify wanton feelings and lustful emotions, but such actions do not bring glory to a person's name; instead, they bring dishonor and pain to the family. As humans, we are able to overcome base desires and feeble wants to attain greatness. That greatness is to become a saint . We are all called to be saints , to be in the presence of God, to spend eternity with our Creator. Yet, each moment that we allow ourselves to only consider the present is but another step away from Him in favor of the temporal. Presently, we are faced with a culture that is dominated with temporal wants and desires. There is no limit to this endless pit, as more and more people put themselves into debt with cre
